Today is a civic holiday in our province and, because of this, my husband and I invited our nephew to come over and eat dinner with us yesterday evening. He brought with him a bottle of red wine made in South Africa to enjoy while eating.

The wines from the Nederburg estate are among my favourite red and white wines. Unfortunately, these wines are not readily available where I now live and I was so happy to see that my nephew had managed to procure a bottle. Our dinner was delicious, the conversation scintillating, and the glass of red smooth and rich.
Have you tasted South African wine?

Sounds good. A friend send a really good bottle of wine, so I’ve been waiting for a special occasion….

I have just finished drinking a glass of South African wine, Colline. It is nice to see you still enjoy Nederburg. The way our government is carry on about alcohol, all the wine will be exported going forward and there will be none for the local market.

Which is not a good thing! And not all South African wines are available here and where does that leave the small wineries?

I am SO pleased to see you enjoy SA wine! Nederburg is one of my favourites too. Our wine industry is in dire straits at the moment, because of our government’s ban on alcohol. The wineries are not allowed to transport any wine by road, which means they cannot export, so quite a few of them will go under before this lockdown is over. If people can help by buying SA wines, some of them might have a chance to survive.

My cousin told me this too. It is very short-sighted of the government to do this as many people’s livelihood depends on working at the wineries.

I think you would appreciate their wines John. Stellenbosch in the Cape is a well-known wine district world over.
