Since my husband has retired, he has taken on the task of making bread for us whenever we need it. That habit is doubly appreciated now as we practice social distancing and limit our trips to the grocery store. Yesterday he made a fresh loaf and I cut into it as soon as it had cooled down enough.

After slathering butter on the crust (my favourite part), I could not decide what to use to top the slice. I decided to make one half of my slice savoury and the other sweet.

The result was delicious! Today I will toast my slice in the toaster oven and maybe top it with butter and ham.
What do you use to top your slice of bread?

I’ve just made my first sourdough loaf today. We should compare notes. Just butter, thanks, thickly spread.

Nothing tastes as good as a thick layer of real butter spread on freshly baked bread!

I love bread – for me it is as good as cake, toasted with a little melted butter.

Your husband’s bread looks amazing! My husband too is doing some bread baking during our shelter in place. He’s had the bread maker for many years but it was packed away till recently. The first loaf was questionable but the second was excellent. Those were just plain white but the next up is cinnamon raisin. I can’t wait. My usual habit is to eat it toasted with butter and maybe some apricot jam.

Fresh bread with real butter and homemade strawberry jam is my favourite. We are lucky to be able to make our own bread when we can get the ingredients …
