Shana entered the diner hesitantly. Sliding behind a table, she lifted the sticky laminated menu to hide behind.
“I see you found it!”
Marco and Amy moved onto the bench in front of her.
“Isn’t this place cool? They make the best food in the area – authentic home-made cooking.”
“I am not so sure about this, guys. Looks a bit sketchy.”
“You said you wanted to be ordinary. This is it! Time to step down from your ivory tower Shana.”
I hoped, though, that I wouldn’t get sick eating food that wasn’t prepared in our sterile kitchen at home.

They say a little grit in your food is good for you. All that sterile compromises the immune system.

It certainly does. Your system needs to get used to the bacteria that is all around us.

I get very annoyed with some individuals obsession with everything being sterile. Then they eat cheese, or mushrooms, or prosciutto and don’t understand the irony.

She must have a really clean kitchen! Mine is ALMOST clean when I’m done for the day. Great story!

The sticky menu is a bit of a put-off, but hey, it’s worth a try!

You would be surprised how many restaurants with sticky laminated menus provide tasty fare.

It may take her tummy a little while to become accustomed to less than sterile conditions 🙂 I hope she’ll persevere, though, and learn to enjoy the wonderful food of every-day people.

I like it, I’ve been in a few places I call Smokey Joes and feel uneasy about the food cleanliness.

Is she a clean freak or is the restaurant dodgy?

Appearances can be deceiving. The restaurant appears like it may be so as it is not dressed up – but the food is well made.

This was a realistic and well-written story, Colline. I had a relative like that. She never ate at any restaurant. I hope your character takes a chance. However, if I do become ill, I don’t go back to a place or vender. —- Suzanne

Thank you Suzanne.
Sometimes a person needs to be brave enough to take the first step – even with something as simple as eating out at a restaurant.

I’m glad she tried it. Little places like this often have the best food. Great story, Colline.

I like this, it can be interpreted so many ways, I like the idea that it is someone brought up in a very wealthy family and is making ‘ordinary’ friends and experiencing things the way most of us do!

That sticky menu? Staff too busy to clean menus – busy prepping food. A multitude of customers to satisfy. A cornucopia of gratified and well fed clients!
