The Hating Game by Sally Thorne made me laugh. The book was one of those pleasures that I will surely re-read in the future. Today I am spending time with her second novel - 99 Percent Mine. I picked up an ARC copy of I Invited Her In by Adele Parks at the OLA Super Conference the end of January as I always enjoy a good thriller. Mel receives an unexpected email from her university friend Abi. She is in trouble and needs Mel’s help. All she wants is a place to stay until she can sort things out. Mel invites her to stay with unexpected consequences. This tale centres on wanting what you can’t have, jealousy, and revenge. In the first half of the novel there were moments when I felt annoyed with the main character, Mel. I wished she would move on and realise how lucky she was. I also kept waiting for something to happen in the story. About halfway through the novel, a change of pace occurred. From that moment on, I became engrossed in the story and turned the pages quickly. No longer did I feel boredom and frustration - instead I felt disbelief and anger. I do not want to say more about the story as I do not want to give any spoilers. Right from the first page, I fell in love with the story Inkling by Kenneth Oppel. From the first line, readers are introduced to an unusual character - Inkling, a blot of ink that comes from The sketchbook of Ethan’s dad. The story kept me engrossed and I finished it in two sittings and not once did I feel a moment of boredom with the story. Instead as I kept flipping the pages over, I thought of how much my students would love this story. Inkling is an unusual character, and Ethan is a normal boy doing things that a normal boy does. Kenneth Oppel has once again written a story that will capture the hearts and imagination of his audience. This novel is creative, has a sense of adventure, and touches on issues important to young readers.
