Weekend Coffee Share: Winter has Arrived

weekend coffee share logo hosted at parttimemonsterblog.comIf we were having coffee, I would invite you in from the cold. After a lovely stretch of mild weather, winter seems to have arrived with a vengeance. We have woken up to ice, then snow, on the ground. Flurries have fallen from the sky as we have walked outside. Children have found spots of ice in the playground to ‘skate’ on. I have had to knuckle down and wear my hat – something I am not too fond of doing! Children have started wearing their snowpants which means I have to factor in extra time for them to get ready to go out for recess, or to go home.

The arrival of the cold is acknowledged, but we are not too focused on it as we prepare for Christmas. I love seeing the decorations wherever we go. We have our tree up in the school and the beautiful decorations in the office. Slowly parents are sending in decorations for our classroom and this is changing the look inside of the room. In class the conversation buzzes around Santa as the children look forward to Christmas and the moment they open their presents. Those children celebrating Hanukkah are excited as well as they look forward to lighting the menorah and opening their gifts.

I still haven’t caught up on my marking and documentation but it has reached a point where it is more manageable. I am hoping to at least get the filing of my students’ work up to date before the Winter break so that when the parents come in for the class party, they can see most of what we have done in class. I have managed to change one of my documentation panels on the bulletin boards outside my classroom and have got everything ready to do the second on Monday. The panels were due for a change as the last ones were put upΒ about a month ago.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am hoping to complete my shopping for Christmas gifts this weekend. I know exactly what it is I am going to buy so it shouldn’t take too long. It is snowing as I am writing this, so it shouldn’t be too cold outside. Writing of feeling cold makes me think of how cold it has been in our apartment for the last week. Something must be wrong with the heating system as the rooms are still uncomfortable, especially our bedrooms. I am hoping that soon the heating will be sorted out before it gets even colder outside.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am looking forward to the time over the weekend when my chores are done. I have started book 3 in Neil Shusterman’s Unwind series and it is as good as the previous ones. In addition, I intend to start working on my gift for Secret Santa. The recipient of my gift will be receiving a handmade crocheted scarf. I am making one using a stitch I haven’t done before and I am hoping that I can get it right.

If we were having coffee, I would wish you a wonderful weekend as you get ready for the upcoming Holidays.

What would you tell me if we were having coffee?

  1. I remember finding those “skating” places in Pittsburgh as a child…could not even walk in it now. I am sure the hand crocheted scarf will be very well appreciated..since it is cold and everyone needs scarves. Thanks for coffee Colline. Happy holidays

    1. When we have a lot of snow and ice patches, we have ‘rinks’ and ‘slides’ in the playground. When on duty, we have to ensure that children take turns on them. πŸ™‚

  2. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who needs to finish up my Christmas shopping! I haven’t heard the word snowpants in years, I have so many memories of the bundling and unbundling in wintertime, a I grew up in Alaska. Wintertime snow make Christmas a little more Christmas-y. I’m in Southern California now, I miss having a white Christmas πŸ’•

  3. It has started to fogged in adding more hazards to drving. Your class seems to be moving right along. Hope. Your apartment heater works better. Each unit here has there own heat. Enjoy your free time and have a pleasant week.

  4. Thank you for the coffee. πŸ™‚ I would share that winter has found us, too, although we don’t have snow yet but the symbols for it are in the weather predictions over the next 10 days so we might get a flake or two sometime this week.

    Happy holidays, Colline. πŸ™‚

  5. Wore my hat for the first time while walking the dog last night / much needed!
And lucky you to know what you need to buy! That will make it easier!
Anyhow – if we were having coffee I would say that I hope your apartment gets the heat thing worked out and I would say that even tho frigid here too-
I love a nice winter season because having 4 seasons is way more fun than one season – and I also know the cold here kills off stuff outside making the habitat what it is….
And after living somewhere with no real winter – I really enjoy winter – but like you – I don’t “love” hats / but thankfully there are some good options

    1. Our apartment is much warmer today, thank you Yvette. It certainly makes being at home more pleasant. And of course my afghan is over me while I am watching TV πŸ™‚
I enjoy the four seasons too. Where I grew up, we had only two seasons really. Here in Toronto I enjoy the sights of all four seasons.
      Have a wonderful day Yvette.

  6. I would say that despite hearing the dread and frustrations that comes with snows and the holidays, the snows still create such pretty scenes and this time is still lovely. Thanks for the lovely coffee talk. πŸ™‚

    1. We haven’t had enough snow fall for it to stay around too long – it is normally gone by the end of the day. Normally we have a snowstorm just after Christmas – and yes, it is beautiful πŸ™‚

  7. If we were having coffee, it would be delightful. I’d tell you I’ve barely done any shopping….yet.
I’m knitting as fast as I can. We had snow in the night do it feels like real winter.

  8. It has been so wet here that I haven’t left the house since the day before our snow (Thursday). But I have to get out to do some shopping and pay some bills. That’s what Monday will bring, I hope, because we’re headed for icy temps again at the end of the week!

  9. If we were having coffee (and I have sincerely missed having coffee with you), I would say that with all that I have been through and still handling with God’s grace and mercy, I am glad for the coffee break. I would tell you that His peace sustains me. I would tell you that I am more focused than ever. I would tell you that winter is different this year. I would ask you to pray for me and my family this season. While gifts are in the list for many, this year I am praying for the gift of a home and stable job. I would ask that as you consider this season, remember those who are truly not as fortunate as you are with so much that is taken for granted. I would say that you, your family and your students (and their families) are in my prayers. I would say be blessed until our next coffee break.

    1. I hope that your Christmas wish comes true. Not having a stable job can be stressful (this is what I have experienced). Have faith and it will come – and maybe in a unexpected way. In the meantime, I wish you and your family a blessed time while you wait. And may you all grow stronger as a family.
