Halloween is such a fun time for kids. They have a chance to dress up, to show off their costumes to people, to have some fun. The day can be a little crazy at schools but I have learned to go with the flow and not expect the children to get too much done.
At the school where I work, we have a costume parade: we walk around the field and then around the block in our community. The parents, and those walking the street in our area, get to see the children in their outfits. Monday was a mild, sunny day so passersby were able to see perfectly what the children were wearing. After the parade, I invited my parents back to the room where the children sang for them. Afterwards, while the children were eating their snacks, the parents looked at the children’s portfolios.

This week I am grateful for Halloween. Not only because I had the chance to see all the wonderful costumes, but also because I had a chance to meet parents and connect with them.

I loved having parents come to the room to check out what their children had been doing. It’s a great way to develop a warm community and strong relationships with individuals. Special events, such as Halloween, provide the perfect opportunity.

I agree. It also gives the parents the opportunity to see what their children have been doing in class.
Also I get to know the parents a little better – and meet those whose children take the bus into school.

I wish more teachers felt the way you do. I find so many teachers feel threatened by parents and the last thing they would do is invite them into the classroom as a group.

I have found that if you are open to parents and share with them what you are doing in class – and why you are doing it – they understand what you are doing with their child.

In the Algarve we’ve seen the little ones parading through the streets with their teachers, Colline. I don’t think much gets done that day at all but it looks to be fun for everyone. 🙂

Not much Jo. But it is good to have some fun every now and then. And they work better for it afterward.

Yay! I enjoyed it as well. I even dressed up as Wenda, the female Waldo, from Where’s Waldo? Are you in costume in this photo? Thanks for being a great teacher to some lucky kids!
