The excitement in the halls was palpable as parents and their children searched for their new classroom and teacher. Some young ones were clinging to their parents while others had a laissez-faire attitude. Nervousness was evident in the new grade 1s as they moved out of the comfort zone of kindergarten. Smiles were seen as friends reconnected.
Yesterday morning I met my students for the first time. Some were wary while others recognised my face. We began the day with quiet as the children tried to figure out my expectations. Throughout the day, however, the initial awkwardness vanished and they were relaxed enough to chat to one another and enjoy the activities I had planned for them. The day was spent going through routines and doing simple tasks to establish these routines.
The first day ended on a positive note. At the end of the day during reflection time, my students indicated that they had liked doing the various activities – and a grade 1 boy told us that he liked playing outside the best! Today we head into day 2 and I look forward to another positive day.
