Grateful for Quilted Gift

My cousin went to South Africa for a holiday during December and while he was there he paid my mom a visit. Luckily he had space in his suitcase so that he could bring me a gift my mother had made: this beautiful quilt.

This quilt is special to me not only because my mom made it, but also because it has brought a little bit of South Africa into my home.

My mother used a traditional South African cloth to make the quilt: Shweshwe. This is a printed cotton fabric which has intricate geometric designs printed on it. The fabric comes in many colours but the one she made has hues of brown.

This week I am grateful that my cousin was able to bring me a gift from my mom that I will treasure and enjoy every time the quilt is on my bed.

(To see another example of my mother’s work, see the post on her quilted runner.)

  1. So quilt making is a family tradition 😀 This is one fine specimen 🙂 Now, your question …… I am grateful for newly found serenity, for not being sick and for being able to work. How does that sound?

  2. Your mother did a beautiful job on your quilt, Colline, both in choice of fabric and design. Her workmanship is impeccable.

I have a handmade quilt on my bed, too. I think of my sister EVERY day and every time I go into my bedroom and see my quilt. Quilts truly are special gifts.

      1. Good on you. My sister sends my some magazines once in a while. The whole last year there was no postal service missed out. Last week in December I received some welcome mail again

  3. I love that fabric — as you say, beautiful patterns, not so nice made up as dresses. Quilting is quite an addictive craft. I was very interested when my children were small, researching the different patterns. How wonderful for you to have this from your Mom. Where in SA does she live?
