The writing desk called to me, reminding me of bills to pay. I looked away from it. My life up to this point had been filled with duty and rules. I have always done what is expected of me. And what have I received in return? Even more responsibility while my dear siblings lived their lives to the full. I glanced once again at the well-worn desk. It was time I put duty aside and do what would bring me fulfillment. I picked up my coat and walked out the door.
What do you think the character is going to do?

(This is my first attempt at writing for the Friday Fictioneers photo prompt. The story needs to be told in 100 words or less.)
great story and enjoyable introduction!!

Love the story, Colline. The possibilities are endless, but I think she’s going to join the circus. 😀

That would be a fun new beginning 🙂

I think she is going to walk outside, but she will come back, duties and rules are stronger than her.

As a person who always does her duty, I can only agree with you. One would hope that she would find a way to do her duty as well as to fulfil her needs.

Nicely written! I think the character will go out for a bit and then return to finish the bills responsibly 🙂

Probably so. She will find it hard, I think, to behave irresponsibly.

I think that after a brief vacation, she will be back to doing her duty because she seems to be that kind of person. If she walks away from it, she will feel an emptiness and some sort of guilt. But walking away for a bit will let her find out who she is and when she does, she will no longer envy her siblings for their kind of life. 🙂

As with many people who often feel duty bound, she would have to learn that she will find fulfilment in following her duty.

I love this Colline. I imagine him putting on his coat, hat, and taking a few slices of bread in his pocket to sit on a bench quietly, enjoying the serenity of a pond and to feed the ducks. ❤

Doing that would certainly relax him and put him in a better frame of mind.

I guess your character is gonna take a walk – perchance on the “wilde side”(hummin’ Lou Reed’s song!) and chill out for a while… 🙂

She certainly needs a walk to get rid of the edginess that she is feeling.

Dear Colline,
Welcome to Friday Fictioneers.
It sounds like your character is ready to have a life of her own. I think she’ll pursue her own dreams whatever they may be. Nicely done.

Nice idea, and a good question. Given that she’s an adult (paying bills), I think she will come back, take off her coat and sit down.

I would hope that she finds a way to feel fulfilled otherwise she would not find happiness.

Wow, a lot of endings or new beginnings here.
But I agree with Elizabeth. I don’t think she’ll last very long without coming back to her rituals and routines.

Colline, Welcome to Friday Fictioneers! Good story and well written. Since she’s been responsible all that time, I agree that she’ll feed the need to go on with her duties. However, she now realizes she needs something more. I think she’ll add something interesting to her days. 🙂 —Susan

Well the beautiful old writing desk and chair, set the scene for the ending to your story.
The elderly gentleman settled his affairs with his siblings, laid his pen down and caught the next ship out of Southhampton, he travelled for six months on a schooner, around the Cape of Good Hope, finally reaching the South American port of Valparaiso.
He began a career in exporting and importing and became a very rich man.
Years later he reestablished connections with his siblings, who had become rich in their own right.
Years later they reunited in Rome and recalled their childhood love as they threw three coins in the fountain.
Just my imagination going wild Colline.
Cheers
Emu aka Ian
